Classes at the Co-op
 
 


The Co-op offers a diverse selection of classes, from our cooking programs to informal discussions about healthy lifestyles inside and out. We believe in educating our community about important food, family, health and environmental issues.

First Alternative strives for excellence in our products and services, including wholesome organic foods, innovative education and community outreach, while offering high quality, local, organic and minimally packaged products whenever possible.

All cooking classes are held in the Co-op’s meeting room at the South Store, 1007 SE 3rd Street, Corvallis. Register by mail, or at the Customer Service Desk (North or South). Pre-registration and pre-payment are required for all fee classes. Co-op owners receive a discount on classes.

If a class is cancelled, we will refund your payment in full or offer you a class credit. If you choose to cancel your registration, please give us 48 hours notice for a full refund. If you do not cancel within 48 hours and are unable to attend, we cannot refund your class fee.

Know someone who enjoys cooking? Consider getting them a gift certificate for a class. It is simple, just stop in and talk to Customer Service.

  Beginning Home Beer Brewing 101 with Joel Rea, Corvallis Brewing Supply      
  Mon April 7th, 14th, and 21at, 7-9pm
$25 Owners, $30 Non-Owners
Have you always wondered what the craze about homebrewing is and how everyone around you is making great beer? Now is the chance to strike up a workplace conversation that does not begin with, “So, how about those Beavs?” Please join Corvallis Brewing Supply owner Joel Rea in this 3 meeting course that will accelerate you into beer making at home. We will cover equipment, process, ingredients, sensory evaluation and styles while we brew up a batch that you will get to take home by the third class!
     
       
  Rainwater Catchment Systems with David Eckert

Enjoy this workshop on rainwater catchment with David Eckert, the man responsible for the catchment system at First Alternative South store. This class will change the way you see water!

     
       
 
No-Knead Artisan Bread with Marc Green
   
  Two dates offered: Sat, April 19th & May 10th, 2:30-4:00pm
$10 Owners, $15 Community Members
Learn this easy, no-knead method and take home a wonderful, artisan 1 1/2 pound loaf. No prior baking skill required. We will mix, shape and bake the bread during the workshop. Bowls and towel available at cost.
   
     
Bagel Workshop with Marc Green

Home-made bagels are healthy, versatile, easy and fun to make, can be done in less than 2 hours from start to finish, plus, they store well. We’ll make all-purpose and whole wheat flour versions - mixing,
shaping and baking.
     
       
  Advanced Brew Class with Joel Rea, Owner, Corvallis Brewing Supply  
 
  Sunday, May 4th 10am-4pm
$20 Owners, $25 Non-Owners
Take your homebrewing out of the boil kettle and into the fire with this advanced brewing class taught by Joel of Corvallis Brewing Supply. The class is primarily focused on all-grain brewing but we will tough such diverse topics as: Forcing your beer to carbonate under pressure! Building yeast up one by one to the masses of many! You will need to be a graduate of Joel’s beginning beer making class or an experienced malt extract brewer.

     
         
  Beginner’s Belly Dance with Lyanna      
  Sat., May 10th, 7pm-9pm
$25 owners, $30 community members

  Carbon-Free Cooking with Lorraine Anderson      
  Sat., June 7th, 11am-12pm
$15 for Owners, $20 for Community Members
Learn the basics of how to cook mouth-watering summer meals outdoors using only the sun’s energy. This workshop will give a brief history and overview of solar cooking, outline the equipment required, and demonstrate the simple skills needed to cook everything from asparagus to zucchini, tofu enchiladas to tandoori chicken, lentils to brown rice, and fruit crisp to blueberry bread pudding.
